Year 11 Physical Education Extension

This Physical Education Course will continue to develop on the core teachings from Junior PE, as well as encouraging each student to reach for top end results throughout each unit. This course is taught in an accelerated nature which will mean that students will be completing assessments that will focus on developing critical thinking and writing skills, that scaffold these students through Year 11 and 12, to develop the essential skills the students will need to continue through to Year 13 Scholarship. It is a class that will create an ‘Excellence’ environment that will promote self-motivated and self-driven success.

The course will be split 50:50 in regard to theory and practical lessons, although only one standard is based on practical performance.




Course Overview

Term 1
The aim of this course is to teach the students in an accelerated environment and to develop essential skills and key competencies that will be required for Scholarship in Year 13. During term 1, the focus will be on critical thinking and communication. These skills will be promoted during the first unit that allows students to display their knowledge on human anatomy and physiology. Providing students a great opportunity to explore the world of sport science and see how the body adapts to exercise, and learn about the 'science' aspect of the sporting world in which the play and learn. It will introduce some new terminology and concepts for the students to breakdown and apply to a given movement. It will reflect a 50:50 theory to practical lesson structure, as the students are encouraged to learn about the physical world in a physical setting. Each student will complete an online assignment during Elevate assessment week in term 1.

Term 2
The start of this term will focus on introducing the concept of Sport Nutrition and the impact on growth, development and sporting performance. This will require each student to complete a 3-day food log, listing their daily food and liquid intake, and plan a meal to cook for their family. Student will be introduced to the major concepts of nutrition, such as Macro and Micro nutrients, vitamins and minerals, and the importance of water intake for their daily needs. This unit will not only foster critical thinking in regards to what fuel students need to put into their developing bodies, but also what they can do to improve their concentration in class and help around at home. This unit will culminate in each student completing an online examination during Elevate Exam week in term 2. The end of this term will start to look into new socio-cultural influences, such as advertising and social media, and how these can be positive or negative for physical activity levels in New Zealand youths.

Term 3
Students will continue with their exploration into advertising and social media. By now students will understand the influence these socio-cultural factors have, not only on themselves, but also on society and those around them. This will lead the students into associated these influences with specific stereotypes or societal themes, such as masculinity, gym culture and healthism. Students will complete a final report into this topic that allows them to discuss their own point of view, while taking into consideration the views and ideas of others and how advertising and social media impact them both. Students will round out this term by shifting towards a more practical element of this course and looking into leadership. communication and physical challenges.

Term 4
The final term of the year will see the student finalising their last assessment and completing their practical grades for their leadership and communication unit. Students will also have a chance to explore indoor bouldering at Northern Rocks. Student will complete an online log and reflection(s) for this unit, which will be finished during Elevate assessment week in term 4.

Entry Criteria

This is a restricted entry course.

Final entry into extension courses:

  • occur after the End of Year Junior School Examinations
  • depends of academic results and/or
  • requires the approval of the Teacher in Charge and Deputy Headmaster responsible for extension courses.

Equipment/Stationery and Course Costs

As this course makes extensive use of digital learning material. It is expected that you will have a laptop or other suitable learning device available for each class when required.
