It is a class that will create an ‘Excellence’ environment that will promote self-motivated and self-driven success.

The course will be split 50:50 in regard to theory and practical lessons, although only one standard is based on practical performance.

Course Overview

Term 1
The aim of this course is to teach the students in an accelerated environment and to develop essential skills and key competencies that will be required for Scholarship in Year 13. During term 1, the focus will be on critical thinking and communication. These skills will be promoted during the first unit that allows students to display their knowledge on human anatomy and physiology. Providing students a great opportunity to explore the world of sport science and see how the body adapts to exercise, and learn about the 'science' aspect of the sporting world in which the play and learn. It will introduce some new terminology and concepts for the students to breakdown and apply to a given movement. It will reflect a 50:50 theory to practical lesson structure, as the students are encouraged to learn about the physical world in a physical setting. Each student will complete an online booklet and submit this after their final write up week in class.

Term 2
The start of this term will focus on the Role and Significance of physical activity in schools. This will require each student to present a written report that explains both the role and significance for being physically active as youths and what this looks like in a school environment. This will also help develop key competencies such as applying breadth and depth to clearly show their understanding of an issue, as well as analysing and engaging their community. The end of this term will introduce some new socio-cultural concepts for the students to unpack and explore within their chosen sporting event. This assessment will consist of the students choosing a sporting event, trend or activity that has had a major impact of themselves, others and society. This can be a global event such as the Olympics, Commonwealth Games, FIFA world Cups etc or a local event like AIMES Games, Summer/Winter Tournament week, but must have an impact on them and NZ. This is a great chance for a student to explore their event and identify key groups that were effected positively or negatively from this event

Term 3
Students will continue with their sporting event assessment and present this before the internal examinations. After this presentation, students will shift their focus towards their internal exams. After the examinations the students will focus on skill learning and factors that affect their development of their volleyball skills. This will also be doubled up with the student being assessed on the practical display of their skills in a volleyball competition and be introduced to Northern Rocks - an indoor bouldering facility to test their strategies and physicals abilities.

Term 4
The final term of the year will see the student finalising their last assessment and completing their practical grades for Volleyball and Northern Rock. After the class has completed this, their focus will then shift towards external examinations to complete their first year at senior school.
