Year 9 Hard Materials

Course Description

The Year 9 Hard Materials Course is an important preparation for future technology courses in both the NCEA Achievement standard and the Vocational Unit standard pathways. Students will gain skills and knowledge in Hard Materials but the material context is just the vehicle for students to express their creativity and problem-solving ability. Students will be given the opportunity to design and make a wooden pencil case and a garden trowel using engineering skills. In addition to their own individual designing and making projects, students will explore the impacts of Technology on society.

The Technology course does also help prepare students for the Food technology courses available as an option in Yr10.


 

Students will work through design process with a variety of challenges and tasks being set.  Personal organisation, increasing independence and the ability to solve problems as well as experience in handling tools and materials are the life skills that will be developed through study of this course.
