Level 3 Building & Construction
This course focuses on a selection of the foundation skills that are required for the Level 3 Building Construction and Allied Trades Skills Certificate (BCATS). The unit standards gained may be used as the first stage of an apprenticeship or as the basis for pre-trade courses. The course is particularly relevant for people wishing to pursue careers in general building and the allied trades
This course consists of theory and practical learning.
Additional Unit Standards are required to complete a full BCATS certificate at level 3.
BCITO the Industry Training Organisation (ITO) that manages the qualifications in schools.
Course Overview
Term 1
Unit Standard 29678 Demonstrate knowledge of, select, and use materials for a stage 3 BCATS projects. Students keep a record and demonstrate knowledge of a range of materials used for their project. Students start on their first practical project.
Term 2
Unit standard 29682 Identify machinery and tools. Student select and use a range of machinery and tools to their practical project.
Term 3
Unit Standard 29681 Measure and Calculate and continue construction of their practical projects. Students show various calculations and how they have measured and cut materials needed for their projects. Students also work on Unit standard 29680 Communicate and collaborate. They communicate with stakeholders to undertake various projects. From their communication they need to establish specifications required for the desired outcome and solutions to complete the project.
Term 4
Complete all unit standard booklets and complete construction of all practical work.
Entry Criteria
This course requires successful completion on 12BCO.
Students who did not pass US 24354 Demonstrate knowledge of health and safety legislation and apply safe working practices in a BCATS environment may not progress to 13BCO.
Students wishing to enter this course who have not successfully completed 12BCO will need to request an exemption. A conversation with the TiC may be required to determine if the course is suitable.
Successful students will need to have successfully completed U.S. 24354 before the Year 13 course commences.
This is a limited entry course.
Limited Entry Courses: While Westlake endeavours to provide all students with their first choices, in some courses there are limits for specialist staffing and/or rooming and equipment reasons. When student numbers exceed these limits students places will be determined by ballot. When students have selected more than one limited entry course, we will aim to place students in at least one of these courses. Students who have taken the subject in the previous year will have priority entry.
