Year 11 Visual Arts

Course Description

Year 11 Visual Arts 

In this course students will learn to create using practical and digital art skills such as painting, sculpture, photography and design. They will explore ideas around telling a story using a visual medium, and as they develop their portfolio, expand their knowledge of practical and digital techniques in art-making.

Tailored to accommodate all levels of skill you will explore topics that resonate with you and relate to your own experiences. 

This course is recommended for students with pathways that involve creative thinking and communication. This course will equip students with the skills necessary to take a senior Art subject in Years 12 and 13 - Photography, Painting, Design, Sculpture would highly benefit from both the creative process and technical skills learnt.


Course Overview

Term 1
Photography & Drawing
We begin the course with a trip to the Auckland Museum to gather a range of visual materials and sources of inspiration.
You will explore the mediums of photography and drawing to create a series of works.

Term 2
Painting
Each student will take part in creating and collaborating on a large-scale mural to be installed in the school grounds. This will be an exciting way for students to leave a permanent legacy here at Westlake Boys.

Term 3
Sculpture & Photography
Students will embrace both expected and unexpected outcomes and will explore various techniques, materials and styles of sculpture. You will be bringing exceptional creative concepts to life and using the photography studio to document your creations.

Term 4
Design
Students are reviewing and re-evaluating artworks from the past terms to develop into a final digital outcome that combines image and text. The year will conclude in a showcase of individual students creative journeys and celebrate not only the technical skills learnt but also showcase their understand of the power of Art to

Entry Criteria

This is an open entry course.


Equipment/Stationery and Course Costs

The classroom has a limited number of computers for student use as the course requires some internet research. It would be advantagious if you have a laptop or other suitable learning device during these times.
You are expected to have and be responcible for your own Art supplies. it is the same as year 10, paint, paint brushes etc, and can be replemished form the school shop)
The course costs are kept to a mimium and cover materials not included in your Art pack and your external folio panels.
