Level 2 Outdoor Education

This course fills up and students will be selected by ballot if the course is full. Please request entry into this course, and state which course you would drop if your application is successful. You cannot take 12PED and 12OEM. If you select 12PED, 12OEM will replace it if you get in.

The aims of this course are to increase pupils skills, knowledge and awareness of the outdoor environment and outdoor pursuits. Trip planning, risk management, building leadership and developing communication skills are a strong focus of this course. Students will be involved in outdoor activities such as rock climbing, caving, bush navigation, first aid, mountain biking and expedition skills. There is also a significant theory component to this course, teaching students to self reflect, analyse risks, and evaluate group development. There are 22 credits available through Achievement and Unit Standards. This course is all internally assessed.

Assessment

All achievement standards will have a practical and theory component. Students must attend the course trips to enable them to complete their achievement standards fully.

Trips and Safety

The practical aspects of this course are an opportunity for students to put their knowledge and learning into practice and demonstrate their understanding of a topic. Students are required to complete all preparatory tasks prior to a trip to ensure their safety and that of their peers while in the outdoors. Alongside this, students must demonstrate safe practice and maturity during in school practical lessons. A student may be denied attendance on a trip if the above requirements have not been met.

Entry Criteria

Level 2 Outdoor Education is an open entry course. This is a limited entry course.

You cannot take 12OED and 12PED.

Limited Entry Courses: While Westlake endevours to provide all students with their first choices, in some courses there are limits for specialist staffing and/or rooming and equipment reasons. When student numbers exceed these limits students places will be determined by ballot. When students have selected more than one limited entry course, we will aim to place students in at least one of these courses. Students who have taken the subject in the previous year will have priority entry.

Students must:

  • meet the requirements to study a Level 2 NCEA Award
  • complete all Consent and Medical Forms associated with this course at the end of this school year through attendance of a Outdoor Education information evening.
  • complete (on time) the payment schedule for the course contributions. This is a requirement for acceptance into this course.

All trip costs are covered by the course contributions along with activity specific equipment. Students will be required to have access to suitable outdoor clothing for all trips. Approximate subject contributions for this course in 2025 are $900 (Please be advised this is not the finalised course cost), this course is heavily subsided by STAR and we endeavour to keep costs to families at a minimum.

Equipment/Stationery and Course Costs

This course makes significant use of digital learning material at various times during the year. It is advantageous for a student to have a laptop during these times. Some learning activities, including assessments, will not be able to be completed without a laptop. All trip costs are covered by the course fees along with activity specific equipment.
