Level 2 Mathematics with Calculus - Extension

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Mrs C. Gouws.

Level 2 Mathematics with Calculus Extension

The aim for the Level 2 Mathematics with Calculus - Extension course is to develop the skills necessary to achieve relational thinking in each standard, as well as how to put these skills into context and extend their thinking to be able to achieve at Excellence levels. Students develop their ability to think logically, apply skills, work with algebra in a variety of contexts, including graphing, and expand their knowledge of trigonometry and calculus.

The Level 2 Mathematics with Calculus course is designed to challenge our most able Year 12 mathematicians, covering the core Level 2 Achievement Standards in Graphs, Algebra and Calculus along with the Level 3 Calculus Achievement Standard 3.3 Trigonometry.

Students develop their ability to think logically, apply skills, work with algebra in a variety of contexts, including graphing, and expand their knowledge of trigonometry and problem solving.  They will also be introduced to differentiation and integration through the Calculus paper. Students will be taught all the skills necessary to achieve each standard, as well as how to put these skills into context and extend their thinking to be able to achieve at excellence levels. This course is also designed as a preparatory course for NCEA Calculus Scholarship and will introduce Level 3 concepts such as differentiation (Chain rule, Product rule and Quotient rule), integration (Definite integral and area under curve), non-linear simultaneous equations, 3D systems of equations, conic sections and trigonometric identities.

Students will gain an endorsement for a course if, in a single school year, they achieve:

  • 14 or more credits at Achieved or Merit or Excellence, and
  • at least 3 of these credits from externally assessed standards and 3 credits from internally assessed standards.

This course is suited to students who gained Excellence for Level 1 in the MCAT (Algebra) and the Tables, Equations and Graphs external.

Entry Criteria

This is a restricted entry course. To gain entry into Level 2 Mathematics with Calculus Extension students:

  • must be taking an extension course in year 11 OR request entry into the course path as part of the course selection.
  • will require approval from the Head of Mathematics based on assessment results through the entire year.

Equipment/Stationery and Course Costs

This course makes significant use of digital learning material at various times during the year. It is advantageous for a student to have a laptop during these times. Some learning activities, including assessments, will not be able to be completed without a laptop.
It is essential to have a Casio Graphics Calculator model FX-9750G II.

Pathway

Our Level 2 Mathematics with Calculus - Extension Course is designed for students who plan to sit the Calculus Scholarship exam in Year 13
