Level 3 Hard Materials
This is a practical, product design course that is based on trialing and testing techniques to manufacture products. Independence and self motivation are essential requirements to success. The course will assist students to move on to university or employment in any of the fields of engineering, design and manufacturing.
The course is also suitable for entry into trade training and apprenticeships where Achievement Standards are a requirement.
Students will be given the opportunity to design and make a personalised Cape Cod Chair and a Personalised Ukelele using the design process which will include stakeholder feedback and stakeholder evaluation.

Course Overview
Term 1
AS91608 Design brief - Students are to identify a stakeholder and work with them to establish a need or opportunity to solve a problem in the stakeholder's organisation. A brief and specifications will be established to enable a solution to be designed and manufactured.
Term 2
AS91611 Prototype design and construction. Students design a solution to the problem seeking stakeholder feedback in the process of the preferred design. Once the design has been developed and finalised manufacture begins.
Term 3
AS91620 Complex procedures- students engage in complex procedures while manufacturing their chosen design solution. In the second half of the term students will engage in writing up their external standard- AS 91617 Undertake a critique of a technological outcome's design.
Term 4
Students will complete writing up their external standard- AS 91617 Undertake a critique of a technological outcome's design and submit to NZQA.
Entry Criteria
Please contact Mr Bryce, HOD Materials Technology, if you did not sit Level 2 Hard Materials but wish to be considered for a place on the course.
This is a limited entry course.
Limited Entry Courses: While Westlake endeavours to provide all students with their first choices, in some courses there are limits for specialist staffing and/or rooming and equipment reasons. When student numbers exceed these limits students places will be determined by ballot. When students have selected more than one limited entry course, we will aim to place students in at least one of these courses. Students who have taken the subject in the previous year will have priority entry.
Equipment/Stationery and Course Costs
This course makes significant use of digital learning material at various times during the year. It is advantageous for a student to have a laptop during these times.
This course will incur a fee for the project materials and consumables.
Credit Information
You will be assessed in this course through all or a selection of the standards listed below.
This course is eligible for NCEA Course Endorsement.
This course is approved for University Entrance.

Only students engaged in learning and achievement derived from Te Marautanga o Aotearoa are eligible to be awarded these subjects as part of the requirement for 14 credits in each of three subjects.
