Level 3 Outdoor Education
The aims of this course are to build on students knowledge base of the outdoor environment and outdoor pursuits. Leadership, safety management, trip planning and self-evaluation will be a strong focus of this course. This course is internally assessed and students will further develop their outdoor skills in rock climbing, caving, bush navigation, mountaineering and expedition planning. There are 19 credits available through Achievement Standards.
13OED is a University Endorsed subject through the delivery of Physical Education Achievement Standard credits. Please be advised that students are unable to gain University Endorsement for both Outdoor Education and Physical Education. Students may request an exemption to take both Level 3; Outdoor Education and Physical Education, however the credits will be combined for subject endorsement in one subject only.
Trips and Safety
The practical aspects of this course are an opportunity for students to put their knowledge and learning into practice and demonstrate their understanding of a topic. Students are required to complete all preparatory tasks prior to a trip to ensure their safety and that of their peers while in the outdoors. Alongside this, students must demonstrate safe practice and maturity during in school practical lessons. A student may be denied attendance on a trip if the above requirements have not been met.
Entry Criteria
Entry into Level 3 Outdoor Education requires successful completion of a Level 2 course in Outdoor Education.
This is a limited entry course.
Limited Entry Courses: While Westlake endevours to provide all students with their first choices, in some courses there are limits for specialist staffing and/or rooming and equipment reasons. When student numbers exceed these limits students places will be determined by ballot. When students have selected more than one limited entry course, we will aim to place students in at least one of these courses. Students who have taken the subject in the previous year will have priority entry.
Students must meet the requirements to study a Level 3 NCEA Award.
Students must also:
- complete all Consent and Medical Forms associated with this course at the end of this school year.
- complete (on time) the payment schedule for the course contributions. This is a requirement for acceptance into this course.
- have an active first aid qualification (gained in the level 2 course)
All trip costs are covered by the course contributions along with activity specific equipment. Students will be required to have access to suitable outdoor clothing for all trips. Approximate subject contributions for this course in 2025 are $1000 (Please be advised this is not the finalised course cost), this course is heavily subsided by STAR and we endeavour to keep cost to families at a minimum.
Equipment/Stationery and Course Costs
This course makes significant use of digital learning material at various times during the year. It is advantageous for a student to have a laptop during these times. Some learning activities, including assessments, will not be able to be completed without a laptop. All trip costs are covered by the course fees along with activity specific equipment. Students will be required to have access to suitable outdoor clothing for all trips.

You will be assessed in this course through all or a selection of the standards listed below.
This course is eligible for NCEA Course Endorsement.
This course is approved for University Entrance.

Only students engaged in learning and achievement derived from Te Marautanga o Aotearoa are eligible to be awarded these subjects as part of the requirement for 14 credits in each of three subjects.
