10 PŪTAIAO

Nau mai haere mai ki Te Puna o Ngā Mātauranga Māori.

Welcome to Te Puna, the Faculty of Te Reo Māori, Te Ao Haka, the Māori Performing Arts and Te Whānau Rūmaki.

Science knowledge assists the Māori world to embrace the future and is important in developing the many types of technology in society. Linking together traditional and modern knowledge enables new knowledge bases to develop and be extended. Interweaving Māori centric concepts within the topics of study allow our ākonga to appreciate how Science is relevant as well as how it plays a part in their everyday lives.

The 10 Pūtaiao course builds on the studies in 9 Pūtaiao so that ākonga have a solid foundation to work from in senior science subjects in Year 11 and beyond.

Course Overview

Term 1
During Term 1, the focus is on energy and the many forms it can take in the Pūngao me te Taiao topic. Ākonga study the importance of these different forms and how energy can be harnessed, with light, sound and electrical energy studied in detail.

Term 2
Small things matter in Term 2, where ākonga look at the world from a microscopic viewpoint in Te Taiao Mōkitokito. Living things are studied at a cellular level under the microscope and the concepts surrounding atomic structure and chemical reactions are introduced.

Term 3
Why are our structures built the way that they are? Ākonga look at forces and materials involved in buildings and structures in Term 3 with an in-depth look at metals and their reactions.

Term 4
Te Ngahere me Ngā Rerenga Rauropi delves into the interconnectedness of our environment and the major role that plants play. The knowledge of plant biological processes, the importance of biodiversity, and how we have used plants in the past as well as in the present day can help us support the survival of our natural world into the future.
