Entry CriteriaThis is an open entry course.
In this course students will learn to create using practical and digital art skills such as painting, sculpture, photography and design. They will explore ideas around telling a story using a visual medium, and as they develop their portfolio, expand their knowledge of practical and digital techniques in art-making.
Tailored to accommodate all levels of skill student will explore topics that resonate with them and relate to their own experiences.
This course will equip students with the skills necessary to take a senior Art subject in Years 12 and 13 - Students who are interested in Photography, Painting, Design, Sculpture would highly benefit from both the creative process and technical skills learnt.
Term 1
Research, Dry and wet media
We begin the course with a trip within Auckland (Location TBC) to gather a range of visual materials and sources of inspiration. Students then complete a series of tasks of which the outcomes form the basis for a series of artworks.
Term 2
Painting/Mural painting
Each student will take part in creating and collaborating on a large-scale mural to be installed in the school grounds. This will be an exciting way for students to leave a permanent legacy here at Westlake Boys.
Term 3
Sculpture and Photography
Students will embark on another trip again to gather a range of visual materials and sources of inspiration. Students will embrace both expected and unexpected outcomes and will explore various techniques, materials and styles of sculpture - bringing exceptional creative concepts to life and using the school photography lighting studio to document their artworks.
Term 4
Photography and Design
Exhibition: The year will culminate in an exhibition of each individual students portfolio of artworks and celebrate their creative journey and technical skills learnt throughout the year.

Equipment/Stationery and Course CostsYear 11 Art pack (A3 clearfile, paint set, brush set, pencil, black pen and eraser).
At different times throughout the year students are required to bring their own school devices as well as materials needed for their sculpture project in term 2 and 3.
Course selection does not guarantee a course will be available or that you have approval to take a course. Final course confirmation is in January and depends on your final results and in rare cases, staff availability.
