Entry Criteria

This is a restricted entry course reserved for students who have struggled with Level 1 Mathematics and have a need to continue with Mathematics at Level 2. It requires satisfactory completion of a Level 1 Mathematics course.

Students who completed Level 1 Mathematics for Numeracy will find the content of this course challenging.

Students must meet the requirements to study a Level 2 NCEA Award.




Level 2 Mathematics

The Mathematics course offers an opportunity for students who are looking to gain level 2 Maths credits but are not looking to specialise in Calculus or Statistics. The course aim is to gain a minimum of 14 credits at level 2, achieved through internal Achievement Standards and Unit Standards only. There are no external exams on this course

Level 2 Mathematics will cover a variety of mathematical and statistical concepts, building on work from Level 1, along with a focus on Household Budgets and Selecting Banking Services.

Students who do well on this course will be able to continue with Mathematics at level 3 on the 13MATH course, which is an approved course for University Entrance. Students who do exceptionally well may be considered for 13MAS.

Q: Can I do engineering if I am in 12MATH?

A: In short, no. You are required to pass Level 3 Calculus to gain entry into the vast majority of Engineering courses, and Level 3 Physics is also normally required.

This course makes significant use of digital learning material at various times during the year. It is advantageous for a student to have a laptop during these times. Some learning activities, including assessments, will not be able to be completed without a laptop.
