Level 3 Outdoor Education - Marine
13OEM Course DescriptionTeacher in Charge: Ms S. Belcher.
Entry CriteriaEntry into Level 3 Outdoor Education Marine requires successful completion of a Level 2 course in Outdoor Education Marine.
Students must meet the requirements to study a Level 3 NCEA Award.
Students must also:
- complete all Consent and Medical Forms associated with this course at the end of the 2023 school year. Students are required to complete an updated Dive Medical as these are only valid for one year.
- complete (on time) the payment schedule for the course contribution. This is a requirement for acceptance into this course.
- have an active first aid and SSI Open Water qualification, along with the Day Skippers qualification (all gained in the level 2 course)
All trip costs are covered by the course contributions along with activity specific equipment. Students will be required to have access to suitable outdoor clothing for all trips. Approximate subject contributions for this course in 2024 are $1700 (Please be advised this is not the finalised course cost), this course is heavily subsided by STAR and we endeavour to keep cost to families at a minimum.
Level 3 Outdoor Education - Marine
This course aims to follow on from 12OEM and to provide more advanced units in scuba diving, boating, sea kayaking and bushcraft. Leadership, risk management, trip planning and evaluation will be a strong focus of this course. This course is internally assessed and 22 credits are available through achievement and unit standards. Students will also have the opportunity to gain their VHF Radio and Coastguard Boatmaster qualifications as part of the course.
13OEM is a University Endorsed subject through the delivery of Physical Education Achievement Standard credits. Please be advised that students are unable to gain University Endorsement for both Outdoor Education Marine and Physical Education. Students may request an exemption to take both Level 3; Outdoor Education Marine and Physical Education, however the credits will be combined for subject endorsement in one subject only.
Trips and Safety
The practical aspects of this course are an opportunity for students to put their knowledge and learning into practice and demonstrate their understanding of a topic. Students are required to complete all preparatory tasks prior to a trip to ensure their safety and that of their peers while in the outdoors. Alongside this, students must demonstrate safe practice and maturity during in school practical lessons. A student may be denied attendance on a trip if the above requirements have not been met.

Equipment/Stationery and Course Costs
This course makes significant use of digital learning material at various times during the year. It is advantageous for a student to have a laptop during these times. Some learning activities, including assessments, will not be able to be completed without a laptop. All trip costs are covered by the course fees along with activity specific equipment. Students will be required to have access to suitable outdoor clothing for all trips.
