Entry CriteriaStudents from 12PED can request an exemption to apply for this course. It is recommended that the student has Merit/Excellence Endorsement of their Year 12 PED course to ensure they can work within the accelerated nature of this extension class.
Level 3 Physical Education Extension
This course follows the mainstream program of Physical Education but with a strong emphasis on reaching for Excellence, student motivated learning and critical thinking skills, which will all by required for their Scholarship submission to complete the year's study. Students will complete Level Three assessments during the first three Terms, and will then have timetable classes to prepare and submit their Scholarship proposal.
All students on Level 3 Extension courses will complete the Scholarship section of the course as a compulsory component.
Course Overview
Term 1
This is the final year of the Extension program for this group and although will culminate with a Scholarship submission, the students will be completing NCEA internal assessments during the first three terms. The first unit this term will allow each student to work with a peer to analyse their movement in a skill/game. This will require the students to call on their previous biomechanical knowledge and terminology and critically evaluate their skills regarding performance and biomechanical efficiency. This will then flow into another evaluation, this time focusing on the effectiveness of the performance improvement program. As with the last unit, this will further build on their previous experience of training program evaluations and how they impact performance. In addition to their previous knowledge, students will also be introduced to the socio-cultural aspects of sport and how they can impact training and performance. Students will also be assessed practically during this term and will have the opportunity to submit their own sport to improve their grades. The combination of these units allows for the students to gain credits that are essential to the year's progresses and will also free up time to allow for their scholarship report.
Term 2
As this term is very condensed, the students must be displaying exceptional self-management and time management skills, as this term will contain internal examinations during week 4. The first quarter of the term will have students completing their evaluations of their skill analysis. Once they have completed this report, their final assessment with look to introduce topics they will consider for their scholarship submission. 3.5 will introduce socio-cultural aspects, that will allow students to demonstrate their researching skills and critical analysis of these factors on their chosen topic.
Term 3
Scholarship is the main focus for this term, The Scholarship process will be student lead and will be facilitated by their Scholarship teacher, as this submission may be new to some students and will need some guidance during the first few lessons. The initial process will require each students to research, unpack and explore their topic, to see if it meets the requirements of a Scholarship topic, as Scholarships are expected to demonstrate high-level critical thinking, synthesise and apply knowledge and understanding. The submission of this report will be due in late October and will finalise their extension program journey.
Term 4
Students will continue to work on their Scholarship submission - class time will be set aside for this work to be completed. Once completed, the student will then shift their focus onto External Examinations to finish their academic year off.
Equipment/Stationery and Course Costs
This course makes significant use of digital learning material at various times during the year. It is advantageous for a student to have a laptop during these times. Some learning activities, including assessments, will not be able to be completed without a laptop.
