Year 11 Course Selection Rules

WBHS Year 11 Course Selection Rules and Information

In Year 11 all students study seven courses as part of the Elevate Programme.

Four courses are compulsory: 

  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Physical Activity (2 periods per timetable cycle)
  • Sociology (4 periods per timetable cycle)

Students must select another three courses:

  • One course from Table A
  • One course from Table B
  • Another course from all available courses (Table A, B, or C)*

  • Robotics*

 

  • Visual Arts
  • Drama and Theatre Arts
  • Contemporary Music
  • Music (Extension)
  • Te Ao Haka
  • Te Reo Maori
  • Languages: French, German, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Spanish
  • Commerce
  • Geography
  • Media Studies
  • History

Table C

  • Investigative Science (Extension)^
  • Physical Education
  • Physical Education with Academy
    1. Rugby
    2. Basketball
    3. Cricket
    4. Football
    5. Hockey

* Students can only select one technology subject.

^ Science from Table A must be selected to take this course.


Extension/Core/Support class selection

Where multiple courses in one subject area are available, students will select the core option. Heads of Department/Faculty will move students into the appropriate courses based on ability shortly after course selection in Term 3 and again, if required, at the end of Term 4 after the Junior End-of-year Examinations.

Notes:

  • For exceptions to the Exclusion List see HOD Pathways (Mr Jackson)
  • If any issues arise regarding the availability of courses in the selection process, please see your Dean immediately.
  • If you have questions regarding entry into extension courses, please see the Head of Faculty for that learning area or subject.
  • Some courses have limited space available due to staffing and rooming considerations and selecting a course does not guarantee a place or that the course will run.
  • All students, in while in Year 10, will have discussions with their Virtute/Te Kauri teacher regarding their 2024 course selections.
