Level 3 Business Studies
During this course students will gain the knowledge, skills and experience to analyse how and why businesses in New Zealand operate in the national and global markets make operational and strategic decisions in response to interacting internal and external factors.
Why Study Business Studies:
Business studies creates opportunities for students to:
- understand the integral role of business in society and the economy
- explore enterprise culture
- develop the key competencies of The New Zealand Curriculum through the fostering of such qualities as initiative, resilience, and resourcefulness and the skills of problem solving, co-operation, decision making, negotiation, and communicating
- gain knowledge and understanding of good business practice and of business as a productive activity
- acquire greater financial capability.
Level 3 Business Studies is a subject approved for University Entrance. This subject can lead to careers in areas such as commerce, business management, finance, banking, etc and running your own business one day.
Course Overview
Term 1
The first half of term 1 is about completing the teaching and learning for their first internal assessment - 3.5 Analysing Human Resources Issues. It is advised that they complete the research for this in pairs before writing up the assessment individually. This will be due about week 6. The rest of this term is spent completing the teaching and learning for 3.1 - Internal factors which is an external standard worth 4 credits. This will also be examined in the mid-year school exams.
Term 2
The focus for most of term 2 is completing 3.4 - Develop a marketing plan for a new or existing product. They are advised to do this assessment in pairs. It is an internal assessment worth 6 credits. This will be due towards the end of the term. We will then be working on the teaching and learning for 3.2 - External Factors, an external standard worth 4 credits.
Term 3
For the first part of term 3 we will finish 3.2 and there will be an end of unit common test for this during week 5. This along with 3.1 will be examined in the end of year school exams. We will then start working on 3.3 -Problem Solving which is the final standard for the year and is an external worth 4 credits. During weeks 7 and 8 in the lead up to school exams we will have structured revision in class.
Term 4
The focus in term 4 will be finishing 3.3 and revision. There will be structured revision in class that caters to the specific needs of each learner.
Entry Criteria
Level 3 Business Studies is an open entry course. However it is preferable that students have studied Level 2 Business Studies, Accounting and/or Economics before choosing to pick this up at Level 3.
Students must all meet the requirements to study a Level 3 NCEA Award.
Equipment/Stationery and Course Costs
This course makes significant use of digital learning material at various times during the year. It is advantageous for a student to have a laptop during these times. Some learning activities, including assessments, will not be able to be completed without a laptop.

You will be assessed in this course through all or a selection of the standards listed below.
This course is eligible for NCEA Course Endorsement.

Only students engaged in learning and achievement derived from Te Marautanga o Aotearoa are eligible to be awarded these subjects as part of the requirement for 14 credits in each of three subjects.
