Level 3 Chemistry - Extension

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Mr J. Webster.

Level 3 Chemistry - Extension

This course extends the students' understanding of fundamental chemical concepts and is designed to provide an opportunity to discuss the impact of chemistry on everyday life. It involves the chemistry of aqueous solutions, and in-depth thermochemical principles. This programme includes preparation for students in order for them to attempt the NZ Scholarship Examination in Chemistry. Regardless of the outcome of the Scholarship examination, the students will participate in an in-depth and high-level enrichment of Chemistry. This will prepare students well for study at university.

It is a requirement for all students in a Level 3 Extension course to sit the Scholarship exam.

Entry Criteria

Entry into Level 3 Chemistry Extension requires successful completion of Level 2 Extension Chemistry at a typically high standard. As a guideline, the majority of students' achievements in the Level 2 Extension course should be at Excellence level, especially the Organic Chemistry standard.

Students gaining Excellence across their in-school and NCEA assessments in Level 2 Chemistry may also be considered for this course.

Consistent effort is an important contributor to success in Level 3 Extension courses, so provisional placement into the course will depend upon achievement throughout the year (not only NCEA results).

With the number of places available in this course being limited, final decisions on placements will be made once NCEA results are available in January.
