Course Description

Entry Criteria

               

Leve 2 Building & Construction is an open entry course. 

This is a limited entry course.

Limited Entry Courses: While Westlake endevours to provide all students with their first choices, in some courses there are limits for specialist staffing and/or rooming and equipment reasons. When student numbers exceed these limits students places will be determined by ballot. When students have selected more than one limited entry course, we will aim to place students in at least one of these courses. Students who have taken the subject in the previous year will have priority entry.



This course focuses on a selection of the foundation skills that are required for the Level 2 Building Construction and Allied Trades Skills Certificate (BCATS). The unit standards gained may be used as the first stage of an apprenticeship or as the basis for pre-trade courses. The course is particularly relevant for people wishing to pursue careers in general building and the allied trades

This course consists of theory and practical learning.   

Additional Unit Standards are required to complete a full BCATS certificate at level 2.

BCITO the Industry Training Organisation (ITO) who manage the qualifications are currently reviewing their unit standards as part of a wider national review so the standards listed may change but the course content will be very similar.

This course does not lead to a University Approved subject in Year 13.

Students who did not pass U.S. 24352  Demonstrate and apply knowledge of safe working practices and use PPE during the construction of a BCATS project    Construction Trades may not progress to 12TBC.

Students who did not sit 11TBC and wish to be considered for entry to the course may apply to Mr C  Clark HOF Technology for possible discretionary entry.  Successful students will need to pass U.S. 24352 before the start of the Year 12 course.           




Course Overview

Term 1
Focus on Health and safety. Students do a safety induction on safe operating procedures in the workshop and machine shop. They learn expected safe behaviour in order to create a safe working environment for all while the practice various jointing which they will and apply when they construct their 2 projects.

Term 2
Students construct a step stool as their project for term 2 and complete US 24350 on portable power tools. Students work from given plans to build their stepstool and also learn to use a wide range of hand tools, portable power tools and machinery. They also learn various joints and joining methods during the construction of their project.

Term 3
Students do a planter box from given plans as a second project and complete US 24354 on Safety. They learn how to read the plan to follow instructions, measure and calculate then construct the planter box

Term 4
Students complete all projects and bookwork for the course

Level 3 Building & Construction

This course leads into career pathways for building and construction and allied trades. Further studies will allow students to become Project managers and other management opportunities.
