Entry Criteria

Please request an exemption and contact Mr Bryce, HOD Materials Technology, if you did not sit Level 1 Product Design but wish to be considered for a place on the course.  

This is a limited entry course.

Limited Entry Courses: While Westlake endevours to provide all students with their first choices, in some courses there are limits for specialist staffing and/or rooming and equipment reasons. When student numbers exceed these limits students places will be determined by ballot. When students have selected more than one limited entry course, we will aim to place students in at least one of these courses. Students who have taken the subject in the previous year will have priority entry.


Year 12 Hard Materials 

This course is intended for students who wish to develop product design and making skills and are considering entering tertiary courses in any engineering or design field. The course is also suitable for entry into trade training where students require or prefer Achievement Standard qualifications. The course focuses on product design with students identifying problems and working through the Technological design process to develop solutions and manufacture and evaluate prototypes. 

In negotiation with staff students can choose their own product to design and make for the year. Sustainability in design is a major focus of the course.

Course Overview

Term 1
Explore sustainability in Product Design
Students select their project and determine its criteria leading to a Product Specification.

Term 2
Students design their project and experiment with different materials and construction techniques to finalise their design

Term 3
Manufacture Project

Term 4
Evaluate product and submit sustainability report.

As this course makes extensive use of digital learning material it is expected that you will have a laptop or other suitable learning device available ( not a mobile phone )
The course does require a course fee to cover the project materials.
